Heart Behind the Music brings intimate songs, stories this weekend

The Heart Behind the Music singer-songwriter showcase will return to the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian on Saturday [April 30] with John Berry, Will Champlin, Linda Davis, Billy Dean and special guest Chloe Channell. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m.

After charming audiences during several previous visits to the MSU Riley Center, the intimate Heart Behind the Music series has become a Meridian favorite. The musicians sit side by side on a bare stage, each with just a guitar or keyboard. They take turns singing songs that mean something to them and telling inside stories about their professional -- and personal -- lives.

Here’s a little background on the performers:

-- Berry’s soulful tenor voice first hit the country charts in 1994 with “Your Love Amazes Me.”

-- Champlin, whose father, Bill Champlin, appeared in a Heart Behind the Music concert at the MSU Riley Center in April 2015, placed third on Season Five of “The Voice” in 2013.

-- Davis, mother of singer Hillary Scott of the superstar country group Lady Antebellum, reached number one on the country charts herself in 1993 with “Does He Love You,” a duet with Reba McEntire.

-- Dean has put more than 20 songs on the Billboard country charts, starting in 1990 with “Only Here for a Little While.”

-- Channell, who at age 14 is already an eight-year stage veteran, has teamed with Dean to write a new anti-bullying song, “Hurt People.”

Not even the performers know in advance what songs they’ll perform or what secrets they’ll reveal. But they can guarantee at least one thing: a deeply touching evening of music and memories. Tickets are $39 and $33 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
