University posts annual security report and student policies

The web page located at www.msstate.edu/web/security.html contains links to the following topics of importance to every Mississippi State University student and also information that is required to be published by federal law:

1. The first section deals with the Mississippi State University Annual Security Report. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off campus buildings or property owned and controlled by MSU; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. This report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, where to obtain information on registered sex offenders, and other matters. If you have questions or wish to obtain a paper copy of the MSU Annual Security Report, please contact the Dean of Students' Office at 662-325-3611.

2. The second section deals with Annual Fire Safety Report. This report as required by the Higher Education Opportunity Act, requires institutions that maintain on-campus student housing facilities to publish an annual fire safety report that contains information about campus fire safety practices and standards of the institution. 3. The third section deal with the Biannual Campus Alcohol and Drug report. In accordance with the requirements of the Drug Free Schools and Campuses Act of 1989 and the Campus Security Act of 1990, institutions must publish a biannual report containing information on campus alcohol and drug policies, programs and standards related to its institution.

4. The fourth section is Mississippi State University's Sexual Harassment & Sexual Assault Violence Policy Statement as outlined by the Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 and its implementing regulations prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex.

5. The fifth section deals with university policies that relate to students. You as an MSU student are responsible to read, understand and adhere to these policies. If you have any questions, please call or stop by the Dean of Students' Office, 608 Allen Hall, 662-325-3611.

6. The sixth section deals with Model Notification of Rights under FERPA for Post-secondary Institutions. You as a student are afforded certain rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) with respect to your education records. These rights are outlined in this section.

7. The seventh section deals with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act. It requires that an institution must certify that it has adopted and implemented a program to prevent the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees. Furthermore, it outlines the criminal and campus penalties for violation of drug and alcohol laws and policies.

8. The eighth section deals with Policies and Consumer/Right to Know information concerning student financial aid. This includes information about student aid eligibility and the determination of student aid awards, cost of attendance, student loan programs and borrower's rights and responsibilities, consequences of withdrawal from school, Satisfactory Academic Progress, Overawards, Study Abroad, Summer School and other financial aid issues. 9. The ninth section deals with the Maroon Alert System. This system is used to notify campus of emergencies, such as severe weather, campus closings, gas leaks, or other serious incidents. You as a student can sign up to receive alerts. To receive Maroon Alert text messages on your cell phone please go to my.msstate.edu and then click on the Banner Tab and under "Personal Information" and select "Update your Maroon Alert Information" Or if you have further questions about the Maroon Alert System please call the Dean of Students' Office at 662-325-3611.

10. The tenth section deals with illegal file sharing on the MSU network. Copying, using, downloading, uploading, sharing, or otherwise distributing copyrighted material -- including, but not limited to, music, movies, books, articles, and computer software -- without explicit permission of the copyright owner or agent or as allowed by OP 01.20 (Policy on Use of Copyrighted Works for Education and Research) is a violation of federal law and MSU policy.
