Brian Owens brings ‘Marvin Gaye Experience’ to MSU Riley Center on Jan. 30

What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience featuring the new voice of American Soul, Brian Owens, will offer an exciting throwback to the heyday of soul music when it visits the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian on Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Owens, a charismatic jazz and soul singer from the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri, does the “experience” up right. His tribute to one of the most iconic vocalists in the history of popular music features a full band and all the great songs everyone remembers, including “Can I Get a Witness,” “I Heard It through the Grapevine,” “Let’s Get It On,” and many more. Strong-voiced female partners match him note for note on such classic Gaye duets as “You’re All I Need to Get By” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

“I love his music and the versatility and depth of his discography,” Owens said. “He had so many wonderful colors to his voice. He had amazing phrasing and emotional sensitivity with lyrics.”

Owens admits that “interpreting the music of Marvin Gaye is no easy task.” But he says it has been richly rewarding to immerse himself in “music that feeds the soul.”

Tickets are $30 and $24 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
