Biosafety workshop series: Module three coming up Dec. 2

The Office of Regulatory Compliance and Safety's three-module biosafety workshop series continues with the third session coming up in December.

The third session takes place Friday, Dec. 2 from 1:30-3 p.m. in 117 Hill Poultry Science Building. The opening session was held Oct. 28 with session two held Nov. 18.

The course consists of three stand-alone modules that cover risk assessment, principles of biocontainment, biological safety cabinets and other equipment, decontamination, biohazardous waste management, emergency response and biosecurity. The goal of the live workshops is to provide an overview of biosafety principles and practices.

Each module may be taken individually. However, a certificate of achievement will only be awarded after completion of all three.

The remaining session in the series will cover:

Module 3: Biosafety Operations
This module will review the transportation and decontamination of biohazardous material, waste handling, emergency response (spill and personnel contamination) and biosecurity. After completion of the module, participants will be familiar with the handling of biohazardous material outside of the lab; be able to determine the most appropriate disinfectant for a particular agent; handle emergencies involving biohazardous material; and understand the importance of securing material from loss, theft or intentional misuse.
