JJ Grey & Mofro bring swamp rock to MSU Riley Center on Nov. 10

JJ Grey & Mofro, steeped in Southern roots and renowned for the passion of their live performances, will bring their blue-collar swamp rock to the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian on Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Before the curtain rises, fans can enjoy a pre-show party with refreshments in the Grand Lobby starting at 6 p.m.

JJ Grey, the lead singer and songwriter, paints loving portraits of the land and the people in his home area around Jacksonville, Florida. They may be flawed, but they’re genuine. Musically, he and Mofro, which includes the two-man horn section of Dennis Marion on trumpet and Jeff Dazey on saxophone, stir together soul, country, Southern rock, funk, gospel, folk, and blues, stretching out into extended jams when the spirit moves.

“Everything Is a Song” from the latest JJ Grey & Mofro album, Ol’ Glory, extols an elusive state called “the joy with no opposite.”

As Grey explained it, “You feel things tingling around you. Everything’s alive around you, and in that a smile comes on your face involuntarily.”

“It feels like more than just being happy because you got what you wanted. This is a joy,” he added.

Tickets are $35 and $29 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
