Mississippi State University Associate Professor of Art Alexander Bostic unveiled his painting of legendary Mississippi bluesman B.B. King during the second-annual B.B. King Day at Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena earlier this month. The daylong celebration featured panel discussions and performances around a theme of "The Influence of Jazz History." The evening ended with a concert at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola.

Register today for Safe Zone awareness training
Mississippi State University's Safe Zone Advisory Board encourages students, faculty and staff members who have not previously attended to register now for the Safe Zone LGBTQ Ally Training on Sept. 26 from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Leo W. Seal M-Club. Safe Zone Allies, who have completed awareness training, are any individuals committed to providing and maintaining a safe and supportive campus environment.

Study abroad fair coming up in October
The Office of Study Abroad (OSA) at Mississippi State will host a Fall Study Abroad Fair on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Colvard Student Union, first floor, in front of the Dawg House. Faculty directors and OSA staff will be there to answer questions about upcoming study abroad programs around the world

Kick off fall with the Maroon Volunteer Center
The Maroon Volunteer Center at Mississippi State details a number of volunteer opportunities for the campus community on its website and in its newsletter this week, including Bulldogs on the Move, Habitat ReStore, Starkville High School Football Boosters concession stands, West Point-Clay County Animal Shelter, Project CLASS, ACCESS Program peer mentors, and more.

'Fame - The Musical' dances into Riley Center
“Fame - The Musical” will bring youthful exuberance and a whole lot of singing and dancing to the MSU Riley Center Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Like the 1980 movie “Fame” that inspired it, this musical adaptation follows a diverse group of talented teenagers through four years of love, heartbreak, disappointment and triumph at New York’s elite High School of the Performing Arts.

Keenum at UN: Universities have ‘vital expertise’ to address world hunger
Mississippi State University President Mark E. Keenum highlighted the important role universities and open data play in addressing world hunger during a speech at the U.N. in New York last week. Keenum spoke in two separate sessions Friday during the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) 2016 Summit.

United Way honors Corey, Garraways
Three Mississippi State employees are being honored for outstanding achievements by the United Way of North Central Mississippi. All university alumni, they include Leslie M. Corey and David W. and Michelle L. Garraway, all of Starkville. With offices in Starkville, United Way of North Central Mississippi serves community organizations in Choctaw, Oktibbeha, Webster and Winston counties.

New Grisham Master Teacher Marsh encourages diverse voices
Acknowledgement of all voices and viewpoints is the key to successfully engaging students in academic discourse, according to a distinguished faculty member in Mississippi State’s Department of English. “Our students will enter and leave numerous discourse communities over the course of their careers. They need to get good at it,” Associate Professor Kelly A. Marsh said last week during her first presentation as the university’s newest John Grisham Master Teacher.

White joins Parking & Transit Services as associate director
Ronnie White has joined Parking and Transit Services at Mississippi State as associate director. In making the announcement, Parking and Transit Services Director Jeremiah Dumas said, “Ronnie has been a great asset to this country, our community, and this university, and we are extremely pleased to have him as an asset in our family and on our team.”
