Zacharias Distinguished Staff Award nominations
Staff Council is seeking nominations for the Zacharias Distinguished Staff Awards. Nominations are being accepted for professional and support staff employees who work at least half-time, have been employed at Mississippi State University for a minimum of three years, and represent the nomination criteria for the award. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 12.

Reading to launch newly published poetry collection
An April 5 public event at Mississippi State University will feature a new poetry collection by an English faculty member. Catherine Pierce, who co-directs the university's creative writing program, will read from "The Girls of Peculiar," issued March 15 by Saturnalia Books. The 8 p.m. event in Rogers Auditorium of McCool Hall marks the Mississippi launch of the book.

CHASES, History Department host leading scholar
James C. Cobb, Spalding Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Georgia, will visit Mississippi State University and deliver the address, "From 'King Cotton' to the Sunbelt: The Rural South and the Global Economy," on Wednesday. His presentation is the final event in the Center for the History of Agriculture, Science, and the Environment in the South Lecture Series for the spring semester.

'Dual Use Dilemma in Biological Research' training
The Office of Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State will host a Responsible Conduct of Research training session on the "Dual Use Dilemma in Biological Research" next week. The session will be led by Patricia Cox, the university's biological safety officer, and FBI Special Agent Brandon Grant.

Former Alumni Association national presidents meet
The Mississippi State University Alumni Association hosted a reunion for all former national presidents in early March. "Our national presidents, past and present, do so much of our Alumni Association and university," said Jimmy Abraham, associate vice president for development and alumni and executive director of the MSU Alumni Association.

Chemistry department plans golf tournament
An April 20 public golf tournament at Mississippi State will benefit undergraduate scholarships in the university's chemistry department. One of many activities surrounding the annual Super Bulldog Weekend, the four-person scramble will begin with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start at the MSU Golf Course, located approximately three miles east of campus on Hwy. 182.

Evans joins Bulldog volleyball staff
Mississippi State University volleyball coach Jenny Hazelwood has announced the addition of Taylor Evans as an assistant coach on the MSU volleyball staff. The Alamo, Calif., native will coordinate MSU's volleyball recruiting, work closely with player development and handle on-court coaching responsibilities in addition to a wide array of additional duties within the Bulldog volleyball program.

Men's Golf opens play in the BancorpSouth Reunion Intercollegiate in Madison on Monday... Baseball hosts Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and then opens a home weekend series with Vanderbilt at 6:30 p.m. on Friday... Softball plays Southern Miss in Ridgeland on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and then travels to Fayetteville for a weekend series against Arkansas... Women's Tennis hosts Kentucky on Friday at 2 p.m. and Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. on Sunday... Men's Tennis plays Kentucky in Lexington on Friday at 3 p.m., and then travels to Nashville for a Sunday match against Vanderbilt... Women's Golf opens play in the Lady Rebel Intercollegiate on Friday in Oxford... Beginning Friday, Track and Field competes in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and also at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge.

Ray named head men's basketball coach
Mississippi State Director of Athletics Scott Stricklin announced Sunday Rick Ray will be introduced Monday as the university's new head men's basketball coach. A press conference has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on the floor of Humphrey Coliseum to welcome the 19th coach in MSU history.
Outstanding women to be honored Tuesday
A women's advocacy organization at Mississippi State is announcing selections for its annual awards program. The university President's Commission on the Status of Women formally will recognize the six 2012 winners during a reception at Memorial Hall's Coskrey Auditorium this Tuesday. The 3-5 p.m. event is open to all.
Fu receives NSF Early Career award
An electrical engineer at Mississippi State University has earned a top research-funding award from one of the National Science Foundation's most prestigious programs. Yong Fu, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received an NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award, which includes a five-year, $400,000 grant to fund his research in smart grid technology.
Service, engagement work makes national honor roll
Mississippi State is among seven Southeastern Conference universities being recognized nationally for community service activities. MSU is a selection for the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. Only slightly more than 100 higher education institutions made the list. MSU is the lone Magnolia State inclusion.
