4-H agent Traci Mongeon of Ackerman recently earned the title of Mrs. Mississippi International and will travel to Chicago in July to compete for the title of Mrs. International 2012. Juli Hughes, MSU Extension Service director in Choctaw County, said 4-H will benefit from Mongeon's promotion of the program.
Retirement reception honoring Cox this Monday
The G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for America's Veterans at Mississippi State will host a retirement reception this week for veterans benefits and program coordinator Lorene Cox. The reception will be held Monday from 2-4 p.m. in Colvard Student Union's Old Main Lounge.
Intro to Lab Safety course this Thursday
The Office of Regulatory Compliance and Safety at Mississippi State is offering an interactive, hands-on training course on general laboratory safety this Thursday. "Introduction to Laboratory Safety" is a three-hour seminar for laboratory users of all experience levels.
New book provides vital resource to land managers
A new publication designed to assist both landowners and scientists in managing moist-soil wetland plants is the work of graduate students and a postdoctoral research associate at Mississippi State. "A Guide to Moist-soil Wetland Plants of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley" (University Press of Mississippi) now is available in bookstores.
MSU Foundation appoints board officers, members
The Mississippi State University Foundation is announcing its officers, as well as new members for the 45-seat board of directors. With offices in the Hunter Henry Center, the MSU Foundation administers the majority of the institution's fundraising activities and endowment funds. The current endowment stands at approximately $347 million.
Program creates 'safe zones' for diverse campus
Mississippi State students struggling with issues related to sexuality and gender often find that they can discuss their concerns with counseling and educational psychology assistant professor Deborah Jackson without feeling judged or threatened. She is among more than 50 faculty and staff members throughout campus now displaying signs identifying their offices as a safe area for someone who needs to talk about those issues.
Healthy Starkville grant application deadline Tuesday
The Healthy Starkville Committee has announced details of $25,000 in cash grants that will be used by community organizations to promote healthy activities and lifestyles. "The purpose is to kick start healthy activities, programs and services in the greater Starkville area, including the Mississippi State campus," said Healthy Starkville chair Alyson Karges.
Grammy-nominated singer performs Thursday
Internationally known jazz vocalist Jane Monheit is the next guest performer for Mississippi State University's 2011-12 Lyceum Series. Her Thursday night concert will feature romantic interpretations of American jazz standards by such composers as Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz, Rogers and Hart, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern.
Nominations open for outstanding women awards
An annual awards program sponsored by the President's Commission on the Status of Women at Mississippi State will recognize exceptional women across all employment categories. Nominations are being accepted until Feb. 21 for the 2012 Outstanding Women Awards.
Register now for February PERS workshop
Human Resources Management at Mississippi State is sponsoring a Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) workshop on Feb. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bost Extension Center on the Starkville campus. The workshop is free for university employees, but pre-registration is required.
Faculty invited to Fulbright information session
Fulbright Ambassador Charles A. Johnson, senior vice president for research at Texas A&M University, will visit Mississippi State on Feb. 14 to support the university's growing Fulbright faculty program.

Mississippi State University Human Resources Management and MetLife are offering Retirewise on campus in late February. The free four-part program is designed to help people feel more confident about retirement.
Recycling change: No more glass in bins, please
Mississippi State's single-stream recycling program has now been in place for more than a year. The program has fundamentally changed the way the university collects recyclables and trash on campus. However, due to a contractor change, MSU can no longer collect glass as part of the recycling stream.
